Appalachian Trail Backpacking, 2015

Troop 233’s tradition of outdoor adventure continues! We backpacked on the Appalachian Trail, with some scouts starting with a hearty 10 mile hike. Many of those scouts are bound for Philmont this summer, so it was great training.  On the way we stopped by historic Gathland State Park, a strategic point in the Civil War.  Other scouts took a shorter 5 mile hike in, and we all met at the Ed Garvey campground.  The hike was entirely along a ridge, offering a great view at times – and from the campground.

The weather was cold (especially for late March!), but we persevered, and headed to bed early! In the morning it sure felt good when the sun came out.  We packed up for the 4 mile, mostly downhill trek out.

We also had a great showing from the parents too!  Thanks to Star Scout Ethan for organizing.
