Eagle is the only scout rank that requires recommendation letters. This page provides some guidance and tools to make this process easier.
This might be the first time in your life that you have had to ask for a reference, but it probably won’t be the last! College applications also require references. When you apply for a job, references names are also required – although your references don’t usually need to write a letter for that.
The Eagle Scout Rank Application provides 6 spots to write the names of people you have asked for recommendations. However, you are required to have a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation for your Eagle Board of Review. These three may not be from family members or your troop leaders. If you wish to include family members or scout leaders, they can be in addition to the three required.
The reference letters will be provided to your Board of Review in sealed envelopes, and will not be read by anyone except by the Board of Review. They will not be returned to you.
We recommend that you seek recommendations from:
- teachers
- coaches
- employers
- family friends
- religious leaders
- neighbors
Recommendation materials
Put together a packet of information for each of your references. It should contain:
- A stamped envelope addressed to your eagle adviser or scoutmaster. Make sure your name is somewhere on the envelope. Your reference should write their own return address on the envelope.
- Introductory letter from the troop (ask your eagle adviser for this)
- Pages D-2 and D-3 from the Eagle Procedures Guide
Your eagle adviser will let you know when your recommendation letters are received!
